The lord
Lords leased land from the king which was known as a manor. The lords further divided up this land into smaller manors that were given to lesser nobles. They reported directly to the king and were very powerful. They were known as the Lord of the Manor and were in complete control of this land. They established their own laws, created their own money and set their own form of taxes. In return for the land they had been given by the king, the lord payed certain taxes to the king and also provided him with an army when needed.
