Peasants
Peasants were given small amounts of spare land by knights. In return they provided the knight with unpaid labour, food and any service no matter the type, whenever it was needed. Peasants had no rights and were not allowed to leave the manor. They had to ask their lord's permission before they could marry. Peasants were poor and could often not afford food for themselves. Most of the people living in the Middle Ages were poor peasants. Some peasants were considered free people and were allowed to leave the lords manor whenever they wanted. They were skilled workers like builders or bakers, while others were more like slaves. They did not own any possessions and were bound to their lord and his land.
